The Rose Garden

What once stood a wooden tool shed, resting atop an old septic tank, has been transformed into Fallene’s pride and joy of La Casa del Castaño.

Since Fallene first discovered David Austin English roses in Denver, Colorado, she fell in love with the layered petals, rich colors and fragrance. She jumped to the opportunity to transform the front gardens to a breathtaking rose garden. She envisioned looking out the window and seeing the sun light up an array of colors from vibrant red coppers, soft apricots, warm peaches, golden yellows and blush pinks.

Our David Austin rose collection, and counting:

Summer Song, Bring Me Sunshine, Roald Dahl, Dannahue, Lady of Shallot, Royal Jubilee and Princess Alexander of Kent. In addition, in other areas of the garden we have Bathsheba, The Pilgrim and Claire Austin.

Kyle had the great Idea to repurpose the old wood beams of the stone house, and have trained two types of Jasmine to wrap around them.

The view of the Portuguese mountains, with our neighbors terraced vineyards cascading below, and the smell of the sweet jasmine and roses it just takes our breath away.

We enjoy having breakfast in our eating nook out front and take in the views.

Throughout the gardens we have over 30 different roses, from climbing to shrubs in a variety of colors and types.

Our garden continues to inspire us to create and experience all that plants have to offer. Fallene creates seasonal wreaths for the home, fermented beverages, custom-blended hydrosols in her alembic still and is now working toward crafting rose and jasmine absolutes—capturing the fragrance and essence of the garden and Galicia, so it can be experienced long after the seasons change.
